The 2019 Adult Abuse Training Institute


The New York State Adult Abuse Training Institute (AATI) is presented by the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging of Hunter College on behalf of the New York State Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS). Annually, this event brings together over 400 participants from a variety of public, non-profit and private service providers where connecting and sharing expertise are facilitated through an array of formal and informal learning activities. The dedication and energy of participants and presenters assures the vitality and effectiveness of the AATI as an outstanding learning event.

This year AATI is exploring the work that prosecutors do in investigating, preparing and trying cases involving various aspects of adult and elder abuse, and how they work with APS, community-based providers of services and MDTs.

AATI is also exploring the concept of Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice is a response to harm that focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims and community at large. It seeks to repair the harm, hold the offender accountable, reset relationships, restore trust and a sense of community, Restorative Justice has a range of practices and approaches, as will be discussed. Adult Protective Services staff and professionals and frontline staff in the fields of healthcare, law enforcement, criminal justice, mental health, public health, aging, domestic violence, as well as workers in a variety of other professions and disciplines that interact with abused adults.

Goals of AATI

  • To build knowledge, skills and networks of professionals working with vulnerable adults
  • To promote the exchange of information, innovative thinking and practice
  • To improve the provision of services to protect vulnerable adults
  • To nurture and sustain all those who are engaged in the effort to prevent and end abuse of adults in New York State
