Understanding Guardianship in New York State

Article 81 guardianships are put into place when adults become incapacitated and require others to make major property and financial decisions for them. As little was known about guardianship proceedings in New York State, we conducted a review of over 2400 guardianship case files state-wide.

Daily Money Management

We created a Daily Money Management (DMM) Assistance Program and have trained agencies throughout New York City to implement the program with vulnerable adults. We also conducted the first analysis of DMM costs, finding that DMM represent an average savings of $60,000 per person compared to nursing home care.

Supported Decision-Making

We are developing and evaluating a brief training on supported decision-making for vulnerable adults.
