Brookdale and partners celebrate creative aging in NYC

The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging, Lifetime Arts, and LiveOn NY welcomed members of the creative aging community to a celebration on February 7 in New York City. Dr. Ruth Finkelstein presented research findings and recommendations from the two-year NYC Creative Aging Initiative (available at creativeagingnyc.org). Awards went to outstanding teaching artists, local leaders of senior-serving organizations, and the New York City Council and its Cultural Affairs and Aging committees. Performances included dancing, singing, theater, and storytelling, and art work by older artists lined the room.

The NYC Creative Aging Initiative was funded by The New York Community Trust to strengthen and advance the field of creative aging in New York City. Brookdale’s research focused on ways to improve and strengthen the SU-CASA program, which brings teaching artists to more than 200 senior centers across the five boroughs. The recommendations outline ways to build on the program’s success, address inequities in resources, and expand the presence of creative aging across the cultural landscape of NYC.
