Book launch delves into aspects of aging with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa

To celebrate the publication of Aging with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa: Health and Psychosocial Perspectives (Springer, 2022), edited by Mark Brennan-Ing, Kristen E. Porter, Jennifer E. Kaufman, Catherine MacPhail, and Janet Seeley, Brookdale presented an international panel of authors on October 12 at Hunter College’s Roosevelt House and online.

  • Xavier Gómez-Olivé, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, gave an overview of the epidemiology of HIV among older adults in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Kabo Matlho, University of Sydney, Australia, reported on a study of comorbidities among older adults living with HIV in Botswana.
  • Charlotte Bernard, University of Bordeaux, France, spoke about depression and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.
  • Catherine MacPhail, University of Wollongong, Australia, reported on a study of social support experiences among older adults living with HIV in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Jepchirchir Kiplagat, Moi University, Kenya, discussed HIV prevention and service provision in Kenya and the particular challenges faced by older adults.
  • Ruth Finkelstein, Brookdale’s executive director, talked about the broader political and structural issues that stand in the way of adequate social protections.
