gonzález-rivera speaks at rally for elder justice at New York State Capitol

Monday, May 8, was an advocacy day sponsored by the Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP) Campaign. A rally was hosted at the New York State Capitol in Albany in support of elder justice legislation.

Brookdale’s director of strategic policy initiatives, christian gonzález-rivera, spoke alongside advocates and several state elected officials in the War Room of the State Capitol. He discussed the importance of the proposed legislation that would make the parole process fairer for older people in prison and give them a better chance at rebuilding their lives in the community once released.

The Elder Parole bill would give all incarcerated people age 55 and older a chance to have their case heard before the parole board, including those sentenced to life without parole. The Fair & Timely Parole bill would make the parole process fairer by requiring the parole board, in cases where they deny someone parole, to clearly state why the person to whom they are denying freedom would be a current threat to society.
