Researchers present work on HIV and on Social Security programs at GSA

Several Brookdale staff members presented papers at the Gerontological Society of America Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston, Nov. 12–15, 2025.

As part of the symposium “Psychosocial and Emotional Wellbeing of Older Adults With HIV,” senior research associate Jasmine Manalel presented “A Scoping Review of Social Needs and Networks of Older Women Living with HIV,” and senior research associate Jennie Kaufman presented “Older Adults with HIV Displayed Advantages in Weathering the Pandemic.”

Kaufman also chaired a symposium focused on the work of the New York Retirement and Disability Research Center (NYRDRC), which was defunded along with the other national RDRCs in February 2025. Kaufman presented “Health Insurance, Poverty, and Medical Costs Before and After Disability Application,” and christian gonzález-rivera, Brookdale’s director of strategic initiatives, spoke on “The Reentry and Disability Application Experiences of Formerly Incarcerated Older Adults.” In addition, Rosemary Hyson and Jenna Tipaldo of the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research presented, respectively, “Poverty at Older Ages: Insights From a Pilot Principal Poverty Measure” and “Disaster Displacement in the U.S.: Understanding Patterns and Implications for Older Adults.” The discussant was Siavash Radpour of Stockton University, formerly of the Retirement Equity Lab at The New School for Social Research.
