Jasmine Manalel is a social-behavioral scientist whose research centers on social relations and health across the lifespan, with a focus on adult development and aging. She is particularly interested in the role of close social ties on the well-being of vulnerable individuals and fragile families. Prior to joining Brookdale, Dr. Manalel completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Social and Behavioral Research Branch of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of NIH. Dr. Manalel has received multiple awards in recognition of her work, including the 2020 NHGRI Intramural Research Award for her accomplishments as a postdoctoral fellow. Her doctoral dissertation was funded by the 2017 Robert Kahn Fellowship for the Scientific Study of Social Issues and was recognized by the Gerontological Society of America with the 2018 Student Research Award. Dr. Manalel’s scientific contributions have resulted in several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals. In addition, she has been recognized for effective plain language communication of science by the NIH and the American Psychological Association. Dr. Manalel obtained her BA in biology and psychology from the University of Virginia, and her MS and PhD in developmental psychology from the University of Michigan.
