This essay draws on the author’s personal history and analysis of Census data to highlight the contributions of grandparents to the economic mobility of immigrant families in New York City. Immigrants are responsible for almost all of the growth in New York’s older adult population. This means that the social service systems in place to help older adults must overcome language and cultural barriers to serve immigrants. Without this support structure, more of New York’s immigrant families will struggle.
