The annual meeting of the Research and Disability Research Consortium was held August 7–9, 2024, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The meeting was hosted by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College with support from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA).
Four researchers from Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging, part of the New York Retirement and Disability Research Center (NYRDRC), discussed their ongoing work in a panel titled “Advancing Equity Through Structural Barriers Research.” Executive director Ruth Finkelstein and christian gonzález-rivera, director of strategic policy initiatives, presented initial findings on disability benefit access for formerly incarcerated people. Mark Brennan-Ing, director of research and evaluation, and research associate Cicely K. Johnson presented preliminary findings on whether LGBTQ+ adults experience implicit bias from SSA. Video is available below. Slides from the panel are also available.
The NYRDRC identifies the institutional barriers that exclude and disadvantage people in social insurance programs.
