Jasmine Manalel, senior research associate, co-moderated a virtual event on March 13 sponsored by the United Nations NGO Commission on the Status of Women and the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics.
The event, “Empowering Older Women as Consumers,” focused on the systemic barriers that economically disadvantage and erase women in the marketplace, particularly women who are older, poor, and minoritized. Charlene Dadzie of the University of South Alabama and Suzanne Shu of Cornell University were the speakers, and Margaret Echelbarger of Stony Brook University co-moderated.
The panel discussed opportunities to redress economic inequalities, promote economic inclusion, and empower older women as both entrepreneurs and consumers to secure their economic futures. The panel also discussed opportunities to hold institutions accountable for facilitating wealth accumulation by women across the lifespan in the service of promoting gender equality and alleviating poverty.
