Brookdale has been excited to be a core institution of the New York Retirement and Disability Research Center (NYRDRC), part of the first expansion of Social Security RDRCs in several decades. Unfortunately, all six RDRCs and sponsored research projects were abruptly terminated on Feb. 20, 2025. This step was taken shortly after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) obtained access to the Social Security Administration (SSA) data systems. Those interested in the stated rationale should refer to the SSA press release of Feb. 20. The six RDRCs are appealing the termination process.
The NYRDRC’s overarching focal area has been those who may not be served well by the current structure of benefit administration. Brookdale in particular addressed issues concerning the formerly incarcerated, sexual and gender minorities, older and late-arriving immigrants, individuals with disabilities and their home care needs, and direct care workers. Brookdale is continuing its program of research in these areas and other related topics.
