Alternatives to Brookdale’s Certificate Program
In 2018 we paused the longstanding Brookdale Certificate Program for revision. The Certificate Program may return in the future in an updated format. In the meantime, please see the following alternatives for programs in aging, gerontology, and geriatric practice. The University of Southern California, Leonard Davis School of Gerontology in conjunction with the American Society on Aging (ASA) offers an online certificate program in various aspects of gerontology. Each course is $1,600 or $1,325 for ASA members. Fall 2026 courses are Equity & Justice in Gerontology, Ageism & Culture, and Innovation & Social Impact in Gerontology. ASA also offers web seminars on issues in gerontology.
The University of Florida offers an online graduate certificate in aging and geriatric practice. No clinical experience is required. For the 15-credit Graduate Certificate in Aging and Geriatric Practice, tuition is $8,250 plus fees; non-degree study is also available. The University of Missouri–Columbia has a 12-credit online gerontology graduate certificate program in gerontological social work. The estimated cost for a certificate is $7,836. Courses are semester-based, and students typically finish in one to two years.
McMaster University Health Sciences, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, offers an online geriatric certificate program. Options vary from 24 to 30 credit hours. The cost per program ranges from around $415 to $1,500.
Indiana University–Bloomington offers gerontology education in the School of Public Health. The graduate certificate program is typically offered on campus or online.
