Alternatives to Brookdale’s Certificate Program

In 2018 we paused the longstanding Brookdale Certificate Program for revision. The Certificate Program will return in the future in an updated format. In the meantime, please see the following alternatives for programs in aging, gerontology, and geriatric practice. (Information is current for 2019, but please check with each institution directly for updates and additional information):

University of Florida offers an online graduate certificate in aging and geriatric practice. No clinical experience is required for this program. This program provides students with “the foundation in aging and geriatric medicine needed to advance their careers.” For the Graduate Certificate in Aging and Geriatric Practice, tuition is $8,786.25 plus fees; tuition is $3,300 plus fees for the non-degree-seeking student in Gerontology. University of Southern California, Leonard Davis School of Gerontology in conjunction with the American Society on Aging (ASA) offers a five week flexible online course for $500. Laura Mosqueda is part of the faculty for this program. Students can earn either or both certificates in Fundamentals of Gerontology and/or Health and Wellness in an Aging Society. To be admitted to this course, the applicant must be an ASA member. ASA has a few different types of membership; individual student membership is currently $77. This program appears to be the shortest and is the least expensive.

McMaster University Health Sciences, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, offers a robust online geriatric certificate program. The cost for the program is around $2,400. Call (905) 777-3837 ext. 12435 for more information.

Indiana University Bloomington offers gerontology education in the School of Public Health. All courses are offered online with the option of on-campus courses and modules in contemporary gerontology. The graduate certificate program for out-of-state, non-degree students has a per credit cost of $610 for online classes. Most classes are three credits, or $1,830 per class. Other fees may apply.

University of Missouri has an online gerontology certificate program. The approximate cost for a certificate is $12,000. Delivery of this program is entirely online: no campus visits are required. Courses are semester-based and offered by multiple universities taking part in the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance. Students typically take two classes each semester and finish in under two years. Course work covers: grant development and management, long-term care, mental health, physical health and aging, program design, implementation and evaluation, and women and aging.
